What’s the best approach to rig a bird with multiple layered feathers? I’d like the feathers to be flexible, but creating a spine chain for each one feels excessive and makes the rig heavy. Is there a way to set up an aim plane or a more efficient system for the feathers to make animation easier?

True, I wouldn’t create spine chain for each feather.
In the past I just created custom scripts for that - first I created/exported joints (one per feather), and with a python script I aimed those towards a curve. But this needs a proper python level.
If you are struggling with python - you could also just try to skin the wings to the main joints (arms), and add correctives. And maybe try puppet tweakers on top.
We did that workflow in the past - gets something working quicker, but quality is not as good as if you have the feathers aiming properly etc
